We previously used sinus augmentations and grafting to gain bone for our implant placements. When first introduced to short implants we were skeptical about the claims. The premise was contrary to traditional thinking about implants. Articles began to appear which indicated that these implants were as successful as traditional length implants. An article published by Ewers showed that 4 ultra-short implants can be used to support full dentures in compromised patients. The result is that within our private practices, the number of graft procedures has greatly diminished resulting in less risk and cost to the patient. The overall success rate of short and ultra-short implants has been comparable to more traditional length implants.
