    Synopsis

Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common form of diabetes, and accounts for over 90% of patients who present with diabetes. A significant portion of the population remain undiagnosed and potentially represent potential complications in patients presenting for both in-office and hospital based oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. The management of T2DM has changed in recent years with the addition of multiple oral and injectable non-insulin medications.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Review the pathophysiology of T2DM as well as the pharmacology of the newer classifications of drugs used for management; and
    2. Discuss recommendations for the peri-operative care of the T2DM patient.
