Synopsis

This presentation will review the recommendations for monitoring and managing the pediatric population before, during and after intravenous sedation. Pre-op fasting guidelines will be reviewed as will recommendations regarding the management of the obese pediatric patient and the child with asthma or recent upper respiratory infection.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the anatomical, physiological, psychological and pharmacological changes that occur during pediatric development and how these differences affect the safe delivery of procedural intravenous sedation in this OMS population;
  2. Identify the guidelines for the safe monitoring and management of procedural intravenous sedation for the pediatric population; and
  3. Recognize how asthma, a current upper respiratory infection, or obesity affect the safe delivery of procedural intravenous sedation for this OMS population.
