The administration of intravenous anesthesia can be associated with unplanned and unexpected patient responses to the anesthetic. This module will review some of the common and uncommon complications associated with intravenous sedation through the presentation of actual cases. The three “R’s” (Readiness, Recognition and Reaction) of emergency management will be discussed in the context of these cases.
- Recognize that airway compromise is often the primary cause for other types of physiologic changes;
- Analyze the use of monitors to recognize early that a change in patient status is occurring; and
- Intervene in a logical and progressive fashion to improve outcomes should an emergency occur.
