Anesthesia is a balance between making the patient comfortable and maintaining respiratory and hemodynamic stability. Unfortunately most anesthetic medications depress respirations. Respiratory compromise is amongst the leading etiology of anesthetic morbidity and mortality. How best can the patient’s anesthetic depth and respiratory status be monitored. This presentation will discuss BIS monitoring and respiratory monitoring (capnography, auscultation and pulse oximetry). What benefit do these monitors provide? What should we be using? Are there other monitors that may be of benefit in the future?
- Summarize morbidity and mortality in ambulatory anesthesia;
- Recognize relationship between PaO2 and O2Saturation;
- List of the benefits of ventilatory monitoring compared to oxygen saturation monitoring; and
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of BIS monitoring.
