Synopsis

This program will provide an interdisciplinary analysis of the surgical margin as it relates to the impact on the management of malignant disease of the oral and maxillofacial region. Topics will include the use of intraoperative frozen section (IOFS) analysis; margin analysis for oral/ oropharyngeal squamous carcinoma, salivary gland malignancy, and cutaneous malignancy of the head and neck; and various types of resection margins for both bony and soft tissue pathology. Topics will be presented in both lecture format and in a panel discussion that considers practical case-based scenarios.

Learning Objectives
  1. Analyze the advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications of frozen section technique for head and neck pathology;
  2. Recognize how the surgical margin affects final tumor management as it applies to malignant pathology involving the head and neck;
  3. Explain the difficulties with the clinical evaluation of true bone invasion as it relates to malignant disease of the oral cavity; and
  4. Compare the role of various reconstructive techniques and how they impact the final ablative tumor pathology outcomes.
