    Synopsis

    Whether in the office, surgery center, operating room or elsewhere, loss of the airway causes anxiety for the entire surgical team. The speaker will discuss, in detail, emergency cricothyroidotomy and tracheotomy, and review options to facilitate difficult intubation and other non-surgical means of airway establishment for adults and children.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Formulate a sequence of non-surgical airway interventions correlated with the status of the patient’s declining airway;
    2. Describe the applications and limitations of cricothyroidotomy and tracheotomy in the emergency airway patient; and
    3. Relate the level of severity of the patient’s airway status to the changes in their physical findings as the airway deteriorates and the crisis becomes more acute.
