    Synopsis

    The speakers will update and review the microbiology and antibiotic therapy of maxillofacial infections. Nomenclature changes of pathogens, molecular diagnosis and emerging pathogens will be explained. Cost-effective antibiotic therapy will reviewed in light of changing antibiotic resistance patterns and pharmacologic developments. Unusual infections will be discussed, including osteomyelitis, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), necrotizing fasciitis and Medication-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ).

    Learning Objectives
    1. Identify the major pathogens of oral and maxillofacial infections by their current names;
    2. Select appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy for a wide variety of cases based upon likely pathogens, and the patient's history and medical condition; and
    3. Identify the diagnostic features, likely pathogens, complications, and appropriate antibiotic therapy for osteomyelitis, SIRS, necrotizing fasciitis, and MRONJ.
