Patients with obstructive sleep apnea can present a number of unique challenges to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. These include heightened peri-operative anesthetic concerns, difficult surgical access and distorted anatomy, and greater challenges with medical management of their co-morbid conditions, amongst others. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons must be acutely aware of how this patient population can create potential liability, and how to mitigate this increased risk.
- Understand potential pitfalls in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea as they relate to medical liability; and
- Identify risk factors unique to the outpatient management of patients with OSA.
