Synopsis

This session is a repeat of SM24.
Patients with obstructive sleep apnea can present a number of unique challenges to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. These include heightened peri-operative anesthetic concerns, difficult surgical access and distorted anatomy, and greater challenges with medical management of their co-morbid conditions, amongst others. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons must be acutely aware of how this patient population can create potential liability, and how to mitigate this increased risk.

Learning Objectives
  1. Understand potential pitfalls in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea as they relate to medical liability; and
  2. Identify risk factors unique to the outpatient management of patients with OSA.
