This session is a repeat of SM26.
Hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy is the newest approach for the management of obstructive sleep apnea. This session will cover how the therapy works as an upper airway stimulation device to prevent airway obstruction during sleep. We will review which patients are potential candidates. Additionally, we will discuss the role of drug-induced sleep endoscopy as a valuable pre-operative diagnostic tool. This session will also review the current literature regarding nerve stimulation therapy.
- Describe the anatomy of the hypoglossal nerve and how the hypoglossal nerve can be used to manage obstructive sleep apnea;
- Demonstrate knowledge of which patients with obstructive sleep apnea are candidates for nerve stimulation therapy; and
- Recognize how drug-induced sleep endoscopy can be used as a pre-operative screening tool.
