This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the workup of secondary Velopharyngeal Insufficiency(VPI) and hypernasal speech in the patient with a cleft palate. In addition, contemporary techniques will be presented with attention to indications, technical “pearls," advantages and disadvantages and outcomes. Workup, timing and sequence of surgery, and indications for techniques will be included. A series of case presentations that cover typical and atypical scenarios will be offered with interactive discussion and feedback from a panel of expert surgeons.

- Describe the nature of VPI and hypernasal speech in the patient with a cleft palate;
- Describe the perceptual and instrumental means of evaluating VPI and hypernasal speech in the patient with a cleft palate;
- Employ the appropriate surgical technique for management of secondary VPI and hypernasal speech in the patient with a cleft palate and their impact on patient outcomes; and
- Apply the information presented to the evaluation of secondary VPI hypernasal speech in the patient with a cleft palate, application of a surgical technique, and management of postoperative complications, as well as atypical clinical scenarios.
