Synopsis

The use of novel oral anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications offers certain benefits compared to Warfarin; however, the management of surgical patients on these newer drugs is not the same as with Warfarin. This symposium will discuss novel anti-coagulants and antiplatelet medicines that are commonly being used, including their mechanism of action and uses in medicine. Updated management strategies for pre-surgical patients on Warfarin will also be presented. Additionally local hemostatic agents and measures used to manage bleeding of patients on medications that cannot reversed will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify the various newer anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications in common use today;
  2. Develop management strategies for pre-op patients on novel oral anticoagulants and Warfarin; and
  3. Discuss available hemostatic agents and techniques to manage hemorrhage in oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.
