The use of novel oral anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications offers certain benefits compared to Warfarin; however, the management of surgical patients on these newer drugs is not the same as with Warfarin. This symposium will discuss novel anti-coagulants and antiplatelet medicines that are commonly being used, including their mechanism of action and uses in medicine. Updated management strategies for pre-surgical patients on Warfarin will also be presented. Additionally local hemostatic agents and measures used to manage bleeding of patients on medications that cannot reversed will be discussed.
- Identify the various newer anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications in common use today;
- Develop management strategies for pre-op patients on novel oral anticoagulants and Warfarin; and
- Discuss available hemostatic agents and techniques to manage hemorrhage in oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.
