Artificial lungs (membrane oxygenators) have been used for decades for acute applications including cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surgery, extracorporeal life support ( ECMO) for acute heart or lung failure, extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECCOR) for asthma, COPD, and as a bridge to lung transplant. Current research is on chronic applications including ambulatory ECMO a year or more out of ICU, home ECMO, chronic lung failure centers, implantable artificial lung oxygenation and CO2 removal.
- Identify the current uses of artificial lungs;
- Recognize the major limitation to artificial lungs; and
- Indicate the status of implantable artificial lungs.
