Patients with neuropsychiatric disorders including Parkinson's Disease, Dementia, Autism, Depression/Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and Schizophrenia, are seen with increasing frequency in the OMS office and frequently require anesthesia as part of their surgical management. The safe management of these patients requires a strong knowledge of these disease processes, the medications used for their management, and the ability to anticipate anesthesia complications related to the diagnosis as well as to the medications used to manage the patient.
- Provide proper preoperative assessment of these patients;
- Recognize the concerns relating to the anesthetic management of these patients and how to best coordinate care with the patient’s psychiatrist, neurologist, or primary care provider;
- Identify the risk factors that increase the likelihood of neuropsychiatric complications of anesthesia; and
- Anticipate and manage potential complications, that may arise in the anesthetic care of these patients.
