    Synopsis

    Wrong tooth surgery continues to plague oral and maxillofacial surgery, despite advances in the technology of record keeping and X-rays. Such incidents are almost completely avoidable. The speaker will provide an overview of the recurrent causes of wrong site surgery and offer tips for avoiding such incidents with designed protocols for referrals, documentation and conduct before surgery.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Institute protocols that recognize referral errors before they are acted upon;
    2. Establish pre-surgical protocols for image evaluation, patient communication and surgical site preparation to prevent the unintended removal of teeth; and
    3. Adapt and install new habits and customs that minimize the risk of wrong site surgery.
