In a substance abuse patient, adverse effects, ranging from mild cardiopulmonary effects to irreversible brain damage, could manifest or worsen during anesthesia. This lecture presents a case of office-based mortality potentially related to undisclosed drug use. Various newer illicit drugs and their effects on anesthesia are also discussed.

  1. Assess and prepare for office anesthesia to treat a patient with substance abuse issues;
  2. Manage office-based anesthesia complications related to substance abuse; and
  3. Identify the effects of substance abuse on various systems and their ability to complicate anesthesia outcomes.
