Some TMJ pathologies necessitate TMJ reconstruction, with or without concomitant orthognathic surgery. Surgical options include autogenous or alloplastic TMJ reconstruction. Published research data and comparative studies will support the efficacy of nine different autogenous graft sources and three total joint prosthesis systems, including outcomes with or without concomitant orthognathic surgery.
- Discuss the wide variety of autogenous tissues (x9) and alloplastic systems (x3) for TMJ reconstruction, including the advantages and disadvantages of each based on available research data;
- Determine the specific TMJ pathologies where autogenous or alloplastic systems may be indicated or contra-indicated for predictable outcomes with and without concomitant orthognathic surgery; and
- Select best treatment for TMJ reconstruction based on published studies for autogenous versus alloplastic surgical options.
