Synopsis

This course on the cleft alveolar defect will discuss complex anatomy, growth and development, and review the surgical technique of cleft reconstruction and graft harvest. Presenters will review the literature and focus on outcome studies to provide the practitioner with information that can be readily used in their practice.

Learning Objectives
  1. Review the staging of cleft lip and palate repair from a global perspective of hard and soft tissue management;
  2. Discuss past and current concepts for the timing and technique of alveolar cleft bone graft placement, and their implications with regard to the development and eruption of the permanent dentition; and
  3. Explain bone graft procurement techniques as they pertain to alveolar cleft bone grafting and discuss the outcome data on which sources best accomplish these goals.
