    Synopsis

    This course will provide an update and review of the microbiology and antibiotic therapy of maxillofacial infections. Nomenclature changes of pathogens, molecular diagnosis, and emerging pathogens are explained. Cost-effective antibiotic therapy is reviewed in light of changing antibiotic resistance patterns and pharmacologic developments. Unusual infections are discussed, including osteomyelitis, SIRS, necrotizing fasciitis, and MRONJ.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Assess the changing microbiology of oral and maxillofacial infections;
    2. Select from new and old antibiotics the most cost-effective choice, considering antibiotic toxicities and patient comorbidities; and
    3. Apply effective culturing techniques today and in the future.
