Simultaneous placement of porous polyethylene malar implants at the time of orthognathic surgery has been described with good success. However, there are diagnostic and surgical challenges inherent in this approach. This presentation will discuss a systematic approach to diagnosing and treatment planning malar implants to be placed during orthognathic surgery, and provide pearls for achieving reproducible good results.
- Assess and utilize malar implants in orthognathic surgery patients;
- Avoid pitfalls to incorrect placement of malar implants; and
- Explain the limitations of the implants and set patients' expectations appropriately.
