Synopsis

Maxillary advancement in the patient with cleft palate is one of the most challenging and thought provoking procedures performed in Orthognathic Surgery. Considerations must include the previous surgical history and sequela, speech concerns, and orthodontic management. In addition, the threat of surgical relapse remains substantial. Defining the treatment plan and objectives for the final reconstruction must include input from multiple disciplines. Technique variations exist with different indications for use in surgical maneuvers. This presentation aims to explore and clarify these issues.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the relevance of inter-disciplinary treatment planning for orthognathic surgery in the patient with cleft palate;
  2. Recognize the importance of differences in surgical technique and when they may be applied; and
  3. Explain the importance of developing a clear treatment planning of objective for excellent functional and aesthetic outcomes.
