Synopsis

The role of skeletal morphology in the development of TMD is not well understood, but TMJ signs and symptoms are associated with dentofacial deformities such as mandibular retrusion and mandibular asymmetry. Additionally, patients with mandibular retrusion or asymmetry have high incidences of disc displacement and condylar bone change. Disk displacement and condylar bone change may be associated with skeletal morphology. Surgical orthodontic treatment is a common and well-accepted treatment approach for patients with dentofacial deformities, and orthognathic surgery has a beneficial effect on TMJ signs and symptoms in most patients with dentofacial deformities.
This session will focus on the interrelationship of orthognathic surgery and TMD. Issues such as development of TMD symptoms after orthognathic procedures, disc displacement and progressive condylar resorption will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  1. Explain relations between jaw deformities and temporomandibular joint disorders;
  2. Identify effects of orthognathic surgery on TMJ signs and symptoms; and
  3. Discuss risk factors of Progressive Condylar Resorption following orthognathic surgery.
