Synopsis

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of adults and 17% of youths in the United States are obese. Obesity-related conditions include cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. The management of the obese patient involves a thorough understanding of the physiologic alterations and associated comorbidities. The purpose of this symposium is to familiarize the oral and maxillofacial surgeon with the condition of obesity and how to provide safe management of these complex patients.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify the epidemiology and sequelae of obesity;
  2. Describe the cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine physiologic alterations in the obese patient; and
  3. Identify the anesthetic management of the obese patient.
