Synopsis

This activity will focus on the new AAOMS capnography requirement for increased patient safety in moderate and deep sedation, and general anesthesia. The discussion will also touch on the growing use of herbal medicine in US medical and dental practices. OMSs should be aware of the potential risks and adverse effects associated with these products in perioperative care. An overview of commonly used herbs and their pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic qualities, as well as herb-drug interaction will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of capnography technology and how it can be applied to clinical situations;
  2. Identify the components of a capnography waveform;
  3. Interpret the clinical significance of what is seen on the monitor;
  4. Understand and identify the most commonly used herbs that may adversely affect the perioperative anesthetic patient;
  5. Recognize the risks and side effects of these herbs and their interactions with anesthetic agents; and
  6. Formulate a treatment protocol for patients using alternative medicine.
