Synopsis

Traditionally, oral and maxillofacial surgeons place multiple implants for fully edentulous patients and restorative dentists fabricate the overdenture according to those existing implants. Overdenture attachment assemblies perform optimally and last longer if implants are placed within specific guidelines such as distance and location. Implant surgeons should know about overdenture attachments so they place the implants accordingly.

Learning Objectives
  1. Successfully perform an implant surgery that is suitable for the attachment system chosen by the restorative dentist;
  2. Formulate a surgical treatment plan based on the height of the available bone and choose an accurate number of implants for the particular attachment assembly design and biomechanical aspects of the treatment; and
  3. Provide a treatment plan that is both surgically and prosthetically suitable for the patient.
