Synopsis
This course will update and review the relevant head and neck anatomy and the surgical principles of treating oral and maxillofacial infections through the use of case examples. Diagnosis, case evaluation, airway management, surgical approaches and procedures, complications, and unusual infections will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Accurately diagnose and plan treatment for acute infections of the head and neck;
- Recognize the clinical presentation of infection in each of the fascial spaces of the head and neck at an early stage and discuss the clinical implications of infection in those spaces; and
- Identify unusual and complicated head and neck infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), cavernous sinus thrombosis, and osteomyelitis.
