Synopsis
This session will provide a historical and contemporary overview of patient safety initiatives, such as analytic strategies and lessons learned from aviation, and guidelines for developing a culture of safety in OMS. Included in this lecture: culture assessment tools, reporting systems, science of safety education, and applying the CUSP model to creating and sustaining a culture of safety in OMS.
Learning Objectives
- Distinguish individual and system factors that cause harm, recognize that humans make mistakes, and identify the relationship between active errors and latent failures;
- Recognize the value of culture assessments, and the importance of teamwork and communication in promoting a culture of safety; and
- Describe how the CUSP model can be applied to OMS practice, and identify proven strategies that sustain a culture of safety in OMS.
