Synopsis
This course reviews the surgical literature for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults. Main topics include goals and guidelines, intrapharyngeal versus extrapharyngeal treatment approaches, unilevel versus multilevel operations, staging protocols, secondary versus primary maxillomandibular advancement with and without adjunctive procedures, and standardization of successful outcomes. Telegnathic operative techniques are illustrated with clinical cases.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the goals, guidelines, indications and measures of surgical success for OSA;
- Identify and prioritize the often multiple or diffusely complex sites or levels of disproportionate naso-velo-orohypopharyngeal anatomy to correctly select what surgical procedures are necessary to treat OSA patients; and
- Understand the surgical principles, operative techniques, and treatment objectives of telegnathic maxillomandibular advancement (MMA).
