A Retrospective Study of the Prognosis in Oral Cancer Patients Undergone Surgery without Adjuvant Therapy
Review of medical record and radiographs on 89 patients who underwent surgery for oral cancer from August 2001 to March 2011 In the Dept of OMFS, Chonnam National University, Korea, and telephone surveys were done to collect data of the patients. Kaplan-Meier method was used for analysis of the results.
The results are as follows:
1. 5-year survival rate was 74.7% in entire patients, and it was 50% in patients with positive neck node, 86.8% in patients without positive neck node, respectively.
2. TNM stage of the patients and 5-year survival rate were as following; stage I: 89.5%, stage II: 82.6%, stage III: 66.7%, stage IV: 59.1%.
3. Recurrence or metastasis was observed in 24 patients; local recurrence in 8 patients, neck node metastasis in 7 patients, local recurrence and neck node metastasis in 4 patients, distant metastasis in 4 patients, local recurrence and distant metastasis in 1 patients.
4. 5-year survival rate was 85.2% in patients without recurrence or metastasis and 52% in patients with recurrence or metastasis.
5. Rate of the recurrence or metastasis within 5 years was as following; stage I: 21.1%, stage II: 21.7%, stage III: 40%, stage IV: 45.5%.
6. Rate of the recurrence or metastasis within 5 years were 8% in patients with positive neck node and 20.8% in patients without positive neck node.
It is assumed that possibility of the recurrence or metastasis becomes higher and survival rate is getting lower in case of higher TNM state and with positive neck node. Also, it is assumed that possibility of the recurrence or metastasis and survival rate are less affected by adjuvant therapy.
