The number of osteomyelitis of the jaws is relatively high. It is difficult to cure, as the convalescence depends on the causes of osteomyelitis largely. The previous reports supported that the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and HBO is effective. Moreover, several studies suggested that surgery at BRONJ stage 3, which is not recommended generally lead preferable convalescence.

The present report shows the result of the treatment including HBO in 41 cases of 39 patients at Matsubaratokushukai hospital in Japan from January 2009 to December 2012.

Sex (male: 16, female: 25)

Age (17-85 year-old)

Treatments (only HBO: 3, operation and HBO: 38)

Causes of osteomyelitis (drug: 10, radiation therapy: 4, bacteria: 25)

The number of enforcement of HBO (Once to 29 times)

Discontinuation cases (6; 14.6%)

6 people were excluded because of the deaths by other illnesses or severe symptoms related to ears. The cases without the pus and the exposure of bones were defined successful in the present study. In the cases of using the combination of surgery and HBO, 83.9% was succeeded.

This report suggests that HBO appears to be a useful adjunctive therapy of osteomyelitis of the jaws.
