Synopsis
This course will review current pharmacologic agents available to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. "New" agents will be discussed with regard to their applicability to the OMS administering anesthesia in the outpatient setting. Respiratory depression is a frequent side effect of many sedation, anesthesia and pain medications. Monitoring for oxygenation via pulse oximetry is routine. With supplemental oxygen, pulse oximetry becomes a late detector of hypoventilation. Monitoring for the adequacy of ventilation will be discussed with an emphasis on capnography.
Learning Objectives
- Evaluate their current practice of anesthesia and decide if "new" agents should be incorporated into the practice;
- Recognize the waveform patterns on a capnograph and interpret the physiologic state of the patient;
- Apply the AAOMS Parameters of Care in regard to perioperative evaluation of oxygenation and ventilation; and
- Discuss why the risk of perioperative hypoventilation is increasing.
