Synopsis
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are frequently called upon to manage dentoalveolar trauma, including tooth fractures and luxated and avulsed teeth, with and without associated alveolar fractures. On-call requirements at local hospitals may require OMSs to manage these injuries. Even those OMSs who do not cover emergency room call may be presented with injury patterns related to motor vehicle accidents, sporting injuries or altercations in their offices. Current recommendations for the evaluation and management of these injuries from different clinical perspectives will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Identify dentoalveolar injuries through clinical exam and radiographic evaluation;
- Discuss the appropriate timing and surgical management protocols to treat the various dentoalveolar injuries in both the adult and pediatric patient;
- List the timing and treatment protocols for endodontic management of the pulp chambers and tooth apices; and
- Discuss the expected treatment outcomes and follow-up requirements, as well as the potential complications and adverse sequelae following dentoalveolar trauma.
