Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis(JIA) or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis(JRA), the most common form of persistent arthritis in children, is usually diagnosed before age 16.The etiology is unknown, but develops inflammation of the synovium. Other types of arthritis in children include psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. The term JIA is replacing JRA since most cases are rheumatoid factor negative. In the past Arthritis of the TMJ has been often overlooked by pediatricians, but recently many JIA patients have had positive TMJ findings. This symposium will provide an update of the disease process and focus on TMJ-related manifestations. Symptoms and diagnosis, including MRI studies, will be discussed. Intra-articular steroid therapy indications, benefits and technique will be presented.
- Discuss the natural history and growth deformity potential of JIA;
- Describe the medical therapy and diagnosis; and
- Surgically manage TMJ-related JIA.
