Synopsis

Antibiotic usage is commonly used for the prevention and treatment of infections. However, the use of these medications for the prevention of infection is frequently done empirically and not based on scientific evidence. This symposium will discuss available evidence on the use of antibiotics for the prevention of infection. In addition, newer generation antibiotics and emerging antibiotic resistance patterns will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  1. Demonstrate familiarity with or interpret the evidence regarding the effectiveness of perioperative antibiotic use;
  2. Demonstrate familiarity with the clinical controversies regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with prosthetic joints, as well as certain acquired and congenital defects of the heart; and
  3. Demonstrate familiarity with the latest antibiotics and emerging bacterial resistance.
