    Synopsis

    Neck and back pain can shorten the career of the busy surgeon. Many surgeons will need to work past traditional retirement ages due to the economy. Knowledge regarding strengthening of the multifidi muscle group can prevent injury and comfortably extend the career of surgeons with neck and back pain.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Describe the physiology that contributes to neck and back pain patterns due to postural positions required during surgery;
    2. Demonstrate and perform a five-minute pre-work/pre-surgical exercise routine to protect during severe back and neck positions; and
    3. Demonstrate and perform five surgical postural ergonomic positions that reduce inefficient load to the neck and back that lead to pain in the spine.
