Synopsis

Implant placement can be extremely difficult following the resection and reconstruction of the mandible and maxilla. Most of the time there is a minimal amount of bone and attached soft tissue available. The use of short implants allows the surgeon to place implants in areas that cannot be further augmented.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe methods that allow the surgeon to avoid augmentation;
  2. Assess the patient with very little bone who needs implant rehabilitation following oncologic resection; and
  3. Select short implants for those patients who have minimal bone and are not good candidates for augmentation.
