Synopsis
Implant placement can be extremely difficult following the resection and reconstruction of the mandible and maxilla. Most of the time there is a minimal amount of bone and attached soft tissue available. The use of short implants allows the surgeon to place implants in areas that cannot be further augmented.
Learning Objectives
- Describe methods that allow the surgeon to avoid augmentation;
- Assess the patient with very little bone who needs implant rehabilitation following oncologic resection; and
- Select short implants for those patients who have minimal bone and are not good candidates for augmentation.
