Synopsis
New diagnostic studies, new medications and the incorporation of evidence-based medicine into patient management have changed the way medical diseases are managed. Using case-based scenarios, current guidelines and recommendations for the effective management of surgical patients in the office and the hospital will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss currently understood guidelines and recommendations for the safe and effective management of surgical patients with significant systemic disease and incorporate evidence-based guidelines into the participant's practice;
- Discuss evidence-based guidelines for the perioperative care of medical conditions encountered in surgical patients and incorporate new evidence-based medical management guidelines into the management of patients undergoing office-based or hospital surgery; and
- Describe new medications being used to manage common medical conditions including coronary vessel disease, hypertension, diabetes, bleeding problems, immune system deficiencies and patients receiving psychotropic medications.
