    Synopsis

    An update and review of the principles of management, anatomy, clinical presentation and complications of oral and maxillofacial infections. Best practices for surgical therapy are identified, including clinical evaluation, imaging, surgical approaches, drains and postoperative follow-up. Presenting factors that predict complications, length of hospital stay and abscess formation are identified.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Identify the anatomic deep fascial spaces involved when given a clinical presentation;
    2. Identify the anatomic spaces that threaten the airway and the airway management techniques that are useful in such infections; and
    3. Name and discuss the eight management principles of head and neck infections.
