Synopsis
This course reviews the surgical literature for obstructive sleep apnea in adults. Main topics include goals and guidelines, intrapharyngeal versus extrapharyngeal approaches, unilevel versus multilevel operations, staging protocols, secondary versus primary maxillomandibular advancement with and without adjunctive procedures, and standardization of success. Telegnathic operative techniques are illustrated with clinical cases.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the goals, guidelines, indications and measures of success of surgery for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA);
- Identify and prioritize the often multiple or diffusely complex sites or levels of disproportionate velo-orohypopharyngeal anatomy to correctly select what surgical procedures are necessary to treat OSA patients; and
- Apply the surgical principles, operative techniques and treatment objectives of telegnathic maxillomandibular advancement (MMA).
