    Synopsis

    This course is intended for oral and maxillofacial surgeons to expand evaluation and treatment techniques in patients with sleep-disordered breathing. Rationale and procedures for using oral appliances and other nonsurgical therapies will be presented in detail. In addition, surgical treatment options with an emphasis on skeletal procedures will be discussed.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Identify the underlying pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea;
    2. Explain the rationale for and apply appropriate techniques for oral appliance therapy in the treatment of mild to moderate/severe sleep apnea and snoring; and
    3. Discuss controversies and indications for patients who require surgical upper airway reconstruction, ie, UPPP, genioglossus advancement and combined procedures.
