Synopsis
Slowly growing, untreated benign tumors and rapidly growing malignant tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region may develop to very large sizes. This course reviews important concepts in the preoperative workup and surgical resection of large tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the molecular biology associated with tumor doubling times and the rationale for surgical therapy vs. neoadjuvant therapy with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy;
- Interpret the utility of obtaining preoperative imaging studies for patients with large tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region including CT, CT angiogram, conventional angiogram, PET/CT and others, including an understanding of the value of preoperative embolization of feeder vessels to large tumors; and
- Describe the options for accessing a large benign or malignant tumor of the oral and maxillofacial region.
