Synopsis

The AAOMS Outcomes Assessment Project was initiated in 2001, with studies on office-based anesthesia, third molar extractions and orthognathic surgeries. The newest study module for the AAOMS Outcomes Assessment Project is the Office Anesthesia and Third Molar Extraction Benchmark Study. The study was conducted from May 1, 2011 to April 30, 2012, with 300 private practice OMSs selected at random to participate in the study. The sampling framework was designed so that the data collected and the tabulated benchmark statistics would be representative of all private practice OMS. Benchmark statistics derived from the collected data for the primary outcome measures related to anesthesia and third molar extractions will be presented and discussed.

Learning Objectives
  1. Assess whether the presented benchmarks accurately reflect the current private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
  2. Utilize the presented benchmark statistics to assess their own practices.
  3. Better understand outcomes research methodology.
  4. Provide feedback for improving this benchmark study.
  5. Provide feedback for future outcomes studies.
