Synopsis

This one and a half day symposium will cover a variety of contemporary topics in anesthesia. The 1st Vice President of the American Society of Anesthesiology, Dr. Jane Fitch, will deliver a keynote lecture on Patient Safety – Past, Present & Future. Topics include a review of how the OMS practice of outpatient anesthesia has evolved, and current education and training. Recent developments in anesthetic and other pharmacologic agents will be discussed. Anesthesia simulation models and scenarios will be demonstrated and the audience will learn how simulation may be incorporated into the resident educational process and maintenance of practitioner skills. SimWars™ is coming to the 2012 preconference Anesthesia Update at this year's Annual Meeting. What's a SimWar? It's an unscripted simulated emergency situation where teams composed of OMSs and staff compete against each other to "save" an emergency patient with an airway management problem. Following each simulation encounter, a panel will review the scenario and debrief the team, and the audience will participate with an audience response system.

Learning Objectives
  1. Discuss the benefits of using simulation as an educational tool
  2. Evaluate their own readiness to respond to an anesthesia-related crisis
  3. Prepare clinical staff for early recognition of a crisis and appropriate responses
  4. Define current trends in anesthetic and other pharmacological agents.
  5. Discuss airway management in the outpatient setting.
