Synopsis

Bisphosphonate osteonecrosis has emerged as a disease process of the facial skeleton that may cause facial pain and deformity. It is usually related to previous intravenous or oral therapy. Effects of oral bisphosponates are less known than those related to previous intravenous exposure. Stopping oral bisphosphonate medication may also have serious consequences relating to treatment of osteoporosis. This symposium discusses the pathophysiology, management and treatment strategies for patients taking bisphosphonate medication and patients who have osteonecrosis.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the issues related to the treatment of patients who are taking bisphosphonates.
  2. Explain the pathophysiology of bone necrosis and bone healing physiology.
  3. Discuss the management modalities for the wide range of problems that may present with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis.
