The management of many common medical/systemic diseases has changed in the last 5 years, in part due to the increased sophistication of diagnostic studies, new medications, and most importantly, the significant effort to incorporate evidence-based medicine into everyday management. Using case-based scenarios with audience participation, the current guidelines and recommendations for the safe and effective management of surgical patients, primarily in the office but also in the hospital setting, will be discussed.
