    Synopsis

Two diverging philosophies relative to management of orthognathic surgery patients presenting with pre-existing TMJ internal derangement will be presented. One will recommend surgical correction of the TMJ concomitantly with orthognathic surgery, while the other will recommend a more conservative and/or staged approach. Evidence-based literature and long-term personal experience will be discussed.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Distinguish those patients who do not require both types of surgery.
    2. Explain the debatable relationship between TMJ and orthognathic surgery.
    3. Discuss whether both types of surgery should be done concomitantly or separately. If concomitantly, how to sequence surgery? If separately, which type of surgery to do first?
