Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have traditionally labored in the front lines of what the ADA has recently termed the "tattered safety net", providing the disadvantaged dental/surgical patient access to needed care. How must we as a speciality respond to growing governmental, public and professional concerns about current factors that appear to be adversely affecting access to care?

1. Provide an objective reason why oral surgeons should continue to provide access to needed dental care.
2. Discuss ways to work within organized dentistry, the government and the community to enhance access to needed dental care.
