Synopsis
The physiology and pathophysiology of hemostasis will be reviewed in detail. Included will be a review of pharmacologic agents impacting on hemostasis with emphasis on newly released agents. A literature-based review of perioperative patient management will be provided.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the physiology of hemostasis, along with the pathophysiology of disorders of hemostasis commonly seen in practice.
- Understand the medical indications for anti-hemostasis and the delicate balance between the physician's responsibility to maintain a level of anti-coagulation and the surgeon's obligation to obtain procedural hemostasis.
- Describe the established and newer medications affecting hemostasis and how these medications potentially impact clinical bleeding and procedural hemostasis.
