    Synopsis

The physiology and pathophysiology of hemostasis will be reviewed in detail. Included will be a review of pharmacologic agents impacting on hemostasis with emphasis on newly released agents. A literature-based review of perioperative patient management will be provided.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Describe the physiology of hemostasis, along with the pathophysiology of disorders of hemostasis commonly seen in practice.
    2. Understand the medical indications for anti-hemostasis and the delicate balance between the physician's responsibility to maintain a level of anti-coagulation and the surgeon's obligation to obtain procedural hemostasis.
    3. Describe the established and newer medications affecting hemostasis and how these medications potentially impact clinical bleeding and procedural hemostasis.
