Synopsis
Slowly growing, untreated benign tumors and rapidly growing malignant tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region may develop to very large sizes. This refresher course reviews important concepts in the preoperative workup and surgical resection of large tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the nutritional, other metabolic and airway assessment of patients with large benign and malignant tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region.
- Describe the circumstances under which imaging studies are ordered preoperatively, as well as the indications for requesting preoperative embolization of feeder vessels of large tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region.
- Describe the various approaches to large tumors of the mandible and maxilla, including lip splitting techiniques, the Weber Ferguson incision and mandibular osteotomies for access to parapharyngeal space tumors.
