    Synopsis

According to the latest survey, over $14 billion was spent on esthetic surgery in 2005. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons can have a unique role in offering esthetic surgery of the facial region to their patients due to their vast experience in maxillofacial skeletal surgery. The neck is one of the most esthetic hallmarks of the head and neck region especially on a profile view. This course will highlight a systematic approach to the rejuvenation of the anterior neck. Procedures such as submental liposuction, platysmaplasty, alloplastic and osteoplastic genioplasty will be reviewed. Proper patient selection, diagnosis, surgical execution and avoidance of pitfalls will be discussed. Utilization of esthetic rejuvenation of the anterior neck at the same time as orthognathic surgery will also be described.

    Learning Objectives
    1. Evaluate the esthetic value and benefit of anterior platysmaplasty as a routine component of every facial rejuvenative procedure.
    2. Offer a step-by-step approach to diagnosis, treatment planing and the surgical execution of an anterior neck rejuvenation procedure.
    3. Identify specific techniques employed in the rejuvenation of the neck (platysmaplasty) in order to augment other surgical procedures, such as orthognathic surgery, routinely perfomred by an OMS.
